10_8_09/ student incident letter home to parents

October 8, 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Late yesterday afternoon, a student at Manor High School was arrested because an unloaded handgun was found to be in his possession.

A school resource officer (SRO), who is a Travis County Sheriff’s Deputy, questioned the student and discovered the weapon. The student was immediately hand-cuffed, removed from campus, and taken to the Travis County jail with out incident.

There has been no connection made to any gang-related activity nor did the student indicate any intent to harm anyone.

The faculty and staff at Manor High School were immediately informed of the incident and were reassured of campus safety procedures.

Manor High School has two School Resource Officers on Staff, and the district’s officials appreciate the quick action of these officers for ensuring the safety of students and staff.

The administration is handling this matter in accordance with our Board’s discipline code, law enforcement and juvenile justice authorities.

“We take this situation seriously and acted immediately to remove any threat to the safety of our children,” said Andrew Kim Superintendent of Schools.

Our students know fully well that we will not tolerate weapons of any kind on school premises. We ask you as parents to assist us in keeping the students of Manor High School safe. If you hear or see anything that concerns you regarding campus safety, please contact me immediately. My door is always open to you.

Respectfully,
Kevin Brackmeyer
Manor High School Principal
